Court forms are much more difficult to fill out correctly than they first appear. The court clerks reject many of them for very simple mistakes, again because attorneys have designed the legal system to be so complex and difficult that the average person does not have the time or resources to figure it out. I spent decades at insurance companies learning how to fill out court forms.

Simple general denial form answers to complaints are also $200 but it goes up from there. It is usually best to answer a complaint using a pleading format (not a court form), with affirmative defenses and these start at $300, but you really need one if there is the possibility that the person suing you has incurred legitimate, provable damages and you are in any way liable for those damages. Affirmative defenses state things like: We do not believe plaintiff was damaged, however, if plaintiff was in fact wronged it was his fault, or someone else’s fault whose identity is unknown at this time, etc., etc., etc.

In depressed real estate markets like the present, lease purchase option contracts are becoming popular once again and I also usually do those for a flat $150.

If the complaint is defective then a demurrer ($300) and/or motion to strike ($300) should be filed. If both are necessary (and are usually essentially the same document) we generally try to give a price break of $400 for such a concurrent demurrer and motion to strike.

Our main skill that we make our living off of is when working for attorneys conducting discovery and drafting discovery related pleading format documents. Discovery is the core of the litigation process and while we try to charge the same $150 for propounding and responding to discovery documents, this is an area where paying a little more for in depth legal analysis really pays off in the long run. The details of discovery are too extensive to go into on this page.

We can draft great complaints but be forewarned that the courts will discriminate against you for suing in pro per if you do not do follow the code of civil procedure to the exact letter of the law. We may need to talk about getting a contract attorney to sign off on the documents and appear in court, and have me be his paralegal doing all of your document work. Which brings me to my next great skill–monitoring and evaluating your legal bills from your attorney. Everything is negotiable. I have worked with third party enterprises that adjust legal bills, just like your insurance company adjusts the value of your claim with them. All insurance companies dispute their legal bills and get them adjusted, so you should too!

Motions and other complex legal documents usually start off at $300 and need to be discussed before embarking on such time intensive assignments.
